Processed on your device

The file is compressed right in your browser: it is not sent over the internet. If your browser can’t handle it (very large file, older browser), it is compressed on our server over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), in memory, and never saved.

Animation kept

The animation, looping, transparency and total length stay the same, and so do the dimensions. The GIF is never heavier than the original. Works on computers and phones (iPhone and Android).

How to compress a GIF?

  1. 1

    Upload your GIF

Drag and drop your GIF, animated or not, into the upload area, or click to choose it.

  2. 2

    Choose the level

Light keeps 192 colors; Recommended uses at most 64 colors and at most 15 frames per second; Strong uses at most 48 colors and 10 frames per second. A GIF that already has few colors loses a proportional share, so it still gets lighter.

  3. 3

    Download the lighter GIF

Click “Compress and download”: the compressed GIF is saved to your device, with the size reduction shown.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce a GIF’s file size?

Upload the GIF and choose a level: a shared color palette is built for the whole animation, only the areas that change from one frame to the next are stored and, at Recommended and Strong, very smooth animations are lightened. The dimensions don’t change.

Is the animation kept?

Yes. The animation, looping, transparency and total length are kept. At Recommended and Strong, a very smooth animation (more than 15 or 10 frames per second) is lightened by merging neighboring frames: it still moves and lasts exactly as long, with slightly less fluid motion.

Which level should I choose?

Recommended (at most 64 colors, at most 15 frames per second) suits most GIFs: memes, reactions, small animations. Light (192 colors) keeps the most smoothness and shades, Strong (at most 48 colors, 10 frames per second) gives the smallest file, ideal to get under a size limit.

Is the GIF compressor really free?

Yes, completely. No fees, no subscription, no watermark and no sign-up: you don’t need to create an account or log in.

Are my GIFs kept private?

Yes. In most cases, the file is compressed directly on your device, in the browser, and is never sent. Otherwise (very large file, older browser), it goes over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), is compressed in memory on our server and sent straight back: it is never saved, nobody looks at it, and it is never shared or reused.

My GIF is still heavy: what can I do?

GIF is an old format that handles long or detailed animations poorly. Convert it to MP4 with our GIF to MP4 converter: the resulting video is often much lighter, and social networks and messaging apps accept it.

Is there a size limit?

Files up to 1 GB are accepted. A very long and very large animation may still be refused above 200 million pixels in total (width × height × number of frames).
